We’ve seen all sorts of crowd funding campaigns from drones the size of a thumb, to games, electric bicycles and whatnot. But it’s the first time we’ve heard of an initiative that strictly involves the auto industry and is intended for women only. Dubbed, Ink & Iron, the car body shop is the brainchild of 29-year old Hillary from Toronto a true petrolhead who has been working in the industry for the past 12 years.
So we all keep bragging that we’d like more women to join the industry. Us, petroheads would most likely enjoy seeing talented female drivers for a change. Well, some of us have the courage to say it loud, since most of men can’t really admit a woman driving better than him. Anyhow, our point is that if we really want to see that happened we need to start thinking different for a change.

According to the Indiegogo crowd funding campaign, Hillary always wished she could have a shop of her own, starting pulling her own strings for a change and claims to have gathered the right experience to do so. “I’ve worked for two of the most reputable shops in Canada, Legendary Motorcar and 427 Auto Collision as well as currently teaching auto body at Centennial College.”

You’d might think it’s quite rare for a woman to work in rather manly conditions, but the 29-year old petrolhead claims that what started out as her being the sole female in the shop has evolved into 9 of them. That is how she got the idea of creating an All Female auto body shop. Besides employing a qualified all female staff, her point is to recruit and train other young female apprentices in a nurturing and uplifting environment.

The shop will open in Toronto, Ontario and will include everything from general auto body repairs such as minor accident damage, dents and scratches and rust repair, to restorations, custom cars and paint. Their $20,000 aim will be used to cover first/last month’s rent of a small auto body shop, as well as buying essential materials, advertisements, legal fees and other.

So far, they only met less than a quarter of their goal, but there’s still about a week left so you never know.
