Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a statement announcing a recall for older-model crossovers and SUVs in the United States of America.
The Italian-American corporation will voluntarily recall an estimated 112,001 vehicles in the US. Along with these units, FCA will also fix similar cars that were sold in Canada, Mexico, and markets outside the NAFTA region.

According to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the issue is linked to the occupant restraint controllers. These devices have an important role in the deployment of passive safety systems, like airbags. It appears that a certain “population” of components is subject to accidental moisture exposure. The moisture could lead to inadvertent airbag deployment or the illumination of warning lights in the instrument cluster.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles estimates that the most likely outcome is the latter. None of the affected cars are fitted with ammonium nitrate inflators and aren’t linked to the Takata airbag recall.

According to the press release, the Italian-American car manufacturer is aware of seven potentially related minor injuries. Fortunately, there are no deaths involved and no related accidents.

The automaker discovered the issue after they investigated two incidents involving accidental airbag deployment. Most likely, the seven minor injuries mentioned above might be caused by the same problem. As you can imagine, unintentional airbag deployment means that the airbags are activated without the car being involved in a crash. This is not a very probable situation, but it happened to seven vehicles out of 112,001 units, so it is not a one-time deal.

The FCA recall is targeting the MY 2009 Dodge Journey vehicles, MY 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town&Country minivans, and MY 2009 Volkswagen Routan models.

Naturally, the fix will come free of charge for the owners. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles urges customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices and contact their nearest dealer to schedule a service appointment. Consumers with inquiries or concerns are encouraged to call the FCA US customer care center.
