Fauzy May Race for Lotus in 2010 - Boss

When the Lotus F1 Team announced their drivers' lineup for the upcoming Formula One season, it was pretty clear that another year would pass without a Malaysian driver on the F1 grid. Race winners Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen were confirmed as leading drivers for the 2010 campaign, while Fairuz Fauzy had to settle for the reserve driver role throughout the duration of next season.

However, talking to local Star newspaper, the team's principal Tony Fernandes did not rule out entirely the possibility of Fauzy making his Formula One debut from as early as next year, although insisting that this is not one of his team's aims for the 2010 season. The important thing, argued Fernandes, is for Fauzy to be ready to race for Lotus on a full-time basis in 2011.

There a possibility of him (Fauzy) being fielded as a driver during race day, no doubt about it. But the important thing is not whether he gets to race next season, but how he develops into a mature F1 driver,” said the AirAsia boss.

Fauzy did nothing but to echo his boss' comments on Monday, admitting that he needs to gain the necessary experience in F1 cars in order to make his debut in the series. Until now, the 27-year old driver raced in several feeder series of F1, namely the GP2 Series, Renault World Series and the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport, while also being a test driver for Spyker a few years ago.

It's every driver's dream to be an F1 driver, so of course I want to be the main driver. But I have to start somewhere to gain experience, just like many other F1 drivers like Kubica, Rosberg and even Kovalainen, who all started out as test drivers before,” said Fauzy.
