Buick fans are asking for the Opel Zafira; Holden buyers in Australia want it too. But all we want from the 2017 Zafira is an OPC model.
Unfortunately, that will never happen. Mercedes has made an AMG model of every car it makes except the B-Class. That just shows you there is no market, but there is one for an OPC line or "warm hatch" version.
Opel will launch the Astra OPC Line within a couple of months. It's going to provide the go-fast look without the big motor. Here's what that's like for the Zafira!
Rendering specialist X-Tomi recently published a Zafira OPC virtual tune. He was, of course, inspired by the recent refresh, just like he was when the Mokka X came out.
It's got a bold black grille, bright red paint, big wheels, larger air intakes and lowered suspension. We'd imagine a German metrosexual with tattoos and a plaid shirt taking his kids to school in the promo ad for this thing. Manly!
While Opel is going to wuss out on the man van, there used to be a time when the German automaker was willing to take such risks.
We are referring to the Zafira OPC, built between 2005 to 2010. It featured the same butch look, paint, and engine as its Astra and Vectra brothers. Power came from a 2-liter turbo making 240 PS and 320 Nm of torque.
And in case you can't imagine what a van with more power than the Golf GTI (of that time) drives like, here's a video of one accelerating. Just imagine pushing past 200 kph like it's nothing... in a family minivan.
But the future of the OPC brand in general hangs in the balance. We say that because there haven't been any tuning projects of the new Corsa OPC since it came out, and the Astra model is nowhere to be seen.
