The Kia Rio was included in the top 20 green cars of the Green Vehicle Guide, an Australian Government initiative. The Rio joins the list in 15th position just a few places behind the Soul in 13, allowing Kia to become the only carmaker to have two mainstream vehicles in the top 20 that aren’t hybrid or belonging to an eco-line.
The Rio powered by the 1.4 liter four cylinder petrol engine mated to a five speed manual gearbox (found on the S and LE Sport models) offers an urban fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km (35.6 mpg). The unit emits 158 grams of CO2 per km, receiving a 7.5 out of 10 Greenhouse Rating (one is the worst and ten is the best).
The 1.4 liter powerplant also returned an Air Pollution Rating of 8.5 out of 10. This rating measures the different emission components including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). In addition to that, it analyzes the amount of particulate matter released into the atmosphere.

"This attitude also flows down through manufacturing. From 2008 all Kia production and after sales sites in Korea have maintained an inventory of greenhouse gasses and have carried out third party assurance reviews. By 2011 the scope of those reviews will include all of our plants including Slovakia, China and the USA," the CEO added.
