Facelift BMW 1 Series Inches Closer to Production

Our trusted spy photographers have been hard on the tail of the upcoming BMW 1 Series LCI model and they just snapped a couple of photos of the 3-door version testing in Germany.

The car seems to be sporting a completely refreshed front fascia as well as a new backside. That’s surprising for a facelift model that usually doesn’t go through drastic design changes. However, we do understand why BMW would address this model in a different way.

That’s because ever since the F20/F21 1 Series models came out, the BMW world has been rather keen on one aspect: they’re ugly! The headlights were most of the problem, ‘thanks’ to their wide design that made the entire car look like it had googly eyes.

It looks like that problem will be solved. By the looks of things (as far as we can discern under the camouflage) the new 1 Series will have headlights similar to the ones used on the 2 Series. That will be a drastic improvement.

Round the back, the taillights also look a bit different, BMW probably going to introduce some LED-lid lamps over there as well. That’s not a problem on the current model as far as we can tell.

Under the bonnet, most plants will be replaced by the new B family of engines. They will range from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder plants (and possibly even smaller, 1.2-liter units) to 2-liter and 3-liter ones for the M135i model.

Power outputs are expected to remain the same, especially in the case of the M Performance Automobile. All the others should see slight performance and efficiency bumps but not by too much.

Since the EU is forcing manufacturers to have all their cars running on EU6 compliant engines starting this fall, expect BMW to launch the LCI 1 Series this year with sales beginning in January.
