Skoda's big debut of March 2015 is the new Superb, a substantial saloon with lots of space and efficient new engines. But there's also a naughty side to their Geneva Motor Show stand, and we're not (just) talking about the girls. A new version of the Octavia RS with 230 horsepower and the Monte Carlo line for the 2015 Fiesta were also revealed here, and we liked them both.
Starting with Octavia, the RS 230 is basically a hot hatch that borrows from the Golf GTI with the Performance Package. Besides the 10 extra horsepower, you also benefit from the electronically controlled front axle inter-wheel lock. It's the first Skoda ever offered such a system and we believe it will dramatically improve cornering, just like it did on the Golf.
The RS 230 can be easily identified by the black glossy grill and black "Xtreme" alloy wheels, which lets you know "that car" will do 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Inside, the car is available with black leather bucket seats with red stitching, available on both the sedan and Combi models.
As for the Fabia Monte Carlo, it's just a body kit that you can combine with all the regular engines. But we think it does a great job of bringing out the hidden sporty character of the car. The list of options is pretty long and includes revisions for the front and rear bumpers, black alloy wheels, tinted lights and windows, joined by a perforated leather steering wheel. The only performance upgrade is the sports suspension.
If you're a young driver and a powerful hot hatch is too expensive to buy, tax or insurance, you can get one of these bad boys with a 110 hp 1.2-liter turbo and still have a quick car. Good job Skoda!
