BMW is finally allowing the X3 M to exist, and both the engineers and the test prototype couldn't be happier. Just look at it cocking its front wheel like a hamster getting his ear scratched!
Hot hatchbacks lift the front wheel when pushed hard. The fact that the X3 M is cocking its front tire suggests a tail-happy setup that isn't too front-heavy. That's good, right?

The world is becoming ever more full of SUVs that pretend to be race cars. The GLA 45 is more like a hatchback, while the RR Sport SVR is too heavy. But this is like a sweet-spot in the range because even with the biggest engine fitted to an M, the X3 won't push past two tons.

BMW's compact executive cars are about to make significant changes. The all-new X3 is bigger, and so will the 3 Series replacement. A new M engine called the S58 is also under development. It's still a twin-turbo 3-liter inline-six, but with upgraded hardware, better response times and at least 450 horsepower.

So the X3 M will match the M4 Competition Pack right out of the bock. And with standard xDrive, it should be marginally quicker off the line too.

Our spyshots paint the clearest picture yet of the performance BMW SUV. The front end covers only the enlarged air intakes, while the rear clearly reveals a quad exhaust system framed by the diffuser.

There's also anther upgrade that you might miss: a wing on top of the trunk, possible a little aero on the roof too. This prototpye seens to have extremely wide rubber at the back, but there could eventually be an even hotter track-focused version. All signs point towards an big battle between with the RS Q5 and GLC 63 before we all switch to electricity. So, what do you think: could the X3 M be the ultimate driving machine in this segment?
