F1 Teams Use Kickdown Innovation for KERS

Once the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) made its way into Formula 1, it was only a matter of time until teams started playing with it in order to maximize the unit's efficiency.

And unlike the 2009 season, when all teams were caught unprepared to deal with the technology, this year some squads have already come up with new elements aimed at producing some kind of advantage over their rivals.

According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, four teams are using a specific method to KERS deployment this year, known as “kickdown”. And the way it works is quite simple actually, as all a driver must do is push the right-foot pedal harder when activating KERS (at the time, he is already at full throttle). That enhances a greater power boost when the system is deployed.

Although the names of the 4 teams have not been disclosed, one of them is certainly Renault. And that's because, according to the aforementioned source, Nick Heidfeld admitted having suggested the idea of a “kickdown” KERS to his new team once he was signed by Eric Boullier's Lotus Renault.

I had the idea to use kickdown when we had traction control,” he said. “We did that at BMW,” added the German.

We're not sure if Mercedes GP are using the innovation also, but if so, the W02 would be one of the most interesting challengers in the paddock this year. As shown in a recent report by the same Auto Motor und Sport, in late March, Ross Brawn has designed a 3rd pedal specifically for DRS (Drag Reduction System) use, which makes it simpler for the driver to activate the adjustable rear wing.
