F1 Teams Interested in Mercedes KERS

If the team's performances are not worthy of an F1 champion (yet), McLaren can easily say they have got it right with their Kinetic Energy Recovery System. After the first 4 rounds of the 2009 calendar, one can argue doubt-free that the Woking based team have so far managed to develop the most effective KERS configuration on the F1 grid, and Mercedes' motorsport director Norbert Haug was the first to admit it.

While still not very enthused with McLaren's performances this season – the team has scored only 13 points in 4 races – Haug admitted the German car maker is very satisfied with the development of KERS. As a confirmation of that, Haug revealed there are a number of teams who have been been inquiring about the aforementioned unit during the past few weeks.

We have had several inquiries both from teams that want to enter in 2010 and teams that are already established,” Haug was quoted as saying by the German media.

Mercedes and BMW are so far the only car makers who have admitted interest in becoming sole KERS suppliers from 2010 onwards, should the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and the FIA agree on adopting a standard unit starting next season.

Not everyone using KERS is happy with the technology, though, as Renault's Flavio Briatore has recently called out to all F1 teams to push for a KERS ban from 2010. While the matter is to be discussed during FOTA's Wednesday meeting in London, it would be safe to assume such a proposal will not meet the necessary number of votes (100% of votes is required) in order to become an official request to the FIA.

The teams that are yet to use KERS this season (but are not currently related to Mercedes through a KERS-mentioned deal) are Toyota, the Red Bull teams, Williams and Brawn. US Grand Prix Engineering and a potential David Richards-secured team are also expected to join the series in 2010.
