F1 Drivers' Parade to Change Format in 2010

Needless to say, the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco presented the multitude of team bosses, sponsors and promoters of Formula One with the perfect opportunity to discuss solutions for the sport to become more fan-friendly and economically sustainable for the future.

Just as we've reported to you yesterday, most of the solutions are related to a more friendly approach towards the fans of Formula One, a chapter that has been quite detrimental for the series in recent years. According to Mercedes GP CEO Nick Fry, the first step the F1 teams will take in order to resolve that issue is changing the format of the drivers' parade before each Grand Prix.

Sure every driver in the F1 roster is obliged to make it to the parade before each race in the F1 calendar, but putting them on a truck and telling them to wave their hands for a few minutes is not going to do it anymore. And that has been confirmed by Fry, although the British official did not disclose the alternative for that parade.

We all know that the driver parade can be improved. Putting the drivers on a truck where they then talk with one another is probably not the best presentation. We'll work on it,” said Fry, who also emphasized the importance of the internet in promoting the action in the Great Circle.

“I think it is a bit of old fashioned thinking to think that by giving people more over the internet they will consume less somewhere else. In fact, with younger consumers and fans are actually doing both - they are not reducing their consumption of one because you are giving them more in another area. They are doing both maybe at the same time,” said Fry yesterday.

In that aspect, however, it will be the FIA and the commercial rights holder of Formula One who will have to work on a solution, with the major aim of “enhancing the communication and promotion of the championship to the media and its worldwide fan base.”
