F-Cell World Drive Meets car2go

Two of the sides of the Daimler business which may turn out to be future have meet this week in Austin, where the caravan of three hydrogen-powered B-Klasse F-Cell models arrived as part of the World Drive tour.

As you already know, the World Drive is an endeavor which started earlier this year as a means to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered vehicles are a viable choice for an electric vehicle. Fitted for now on the B-Klasse, the fuel cell system will become an important part of Daimler's future electric goals.

car2go on the other hand, the car sharing service operated by Daimler, has transformed for the past year or so the face of Austin, Texas. 15,000 of the city's inhabitants are using the smart vehicles deployed as part of the program.

Bringing the two projects together in the city was not accidental, with Daimler wanting to show car2go customers how the next models in the sharing fleet might work like in the future.

“Electric vehicles with fuel cell are an important step on the way towards future mobility. The F-CELL World Drive demonstrates in impressive fashion the practical merits and the major benefits of this technology which are directly apparent to the customer, such as short refuelling times and a large range,” said Thomas Weber, Daimler board member for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

“In addition to that, we are fully convinced, that projects like car2go, allowing an alternative kind of vehicle use in cities, are an answer to the challenges of future automobility.”
