F-150 EcoBoost Engine, Naked and Ripped Apart

If you were one of the people attending this year's North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), then you might have caught a glimpse of a very interesting publicity stunt pulled by American manufacturer Ford. One which had at its center the EcoBoost engine fitted onto the F-150.

As you might remember, this engine, slammed with the “hero” designation by Ford, has been going through an ordeal for a few months or so, being forced to do things no engine should be forced to do. And yet, it survived, and this was exactly what the engineers tearing it apart on the floor of the NAIAS show were trying to prove.

According to Ford, the engine is, after enduring tremendous pain, still within factory specifications. No major component, block, pistons, turbos, crankshaft or valves have been damaged or lost their characteristics following the 160,000 miles of torment.

Supposedly, Ford took a great deal of risk by opening the hood of the F-150 and dismantling the engine in front of a live audience, especially one from Detroit. And that even after dyno tests have shown that the unit did not use its modjo after pulling logs or racing in the Baja 1000.

“I was amazed that, first, the engine looked as good as it did, and second, Ford took the chance of opening it up in front of the public,” said Gary Heinz, coordinator of the Automotive Student Service Education Training program at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn.

“You know that in a Detroit crowd, there are a lot of auto mechanics who know a good engine from a worn out one.”

If you missed, for one reason or another, the live stripping of the engine, you can find it at the following link.
