Partly written by Lord of the Rings producer Peter Jackson, the screenplay adaptation of Philip Reeve’s Mortal Engines is set to shock the world from the beginning of next month. And as the premiere date approaches, a new trailer hit the web on Thursday. And an action-packed one at that.
Starring Hugo Weaving (Matrix and Lord of the Rings) and Hera Hilmar (The Ottoman Lieutenant), the movie tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world, always on the move because of motorized predator cities that hunt other equally motorized cities. The biggest, meanest of them all is London, returned to a Victorian-era society and ran by Guilds.

Whereas the first trailer for the movie showed us glimpses of this exciting yet dangerous world, this new one also depicts how the world as we know it ended: the Earth’s crust was shattered into a thousand pieces by a powerful weapon during a major war.

Following that war, people came together in new city-like constructs, this time built on water, in the air, and on the land.

In the world craving for resources, land-based cities are the deadliest ones, motorized monsters that use wheels, harpoons, winches, saw blades and weapons of all shapes and sizes to hunt and devour other settlements, large and small.

The storyline centers on a group of rebels trying to stop London from taking over this insane world.

Previous clips of Mortal Engines have shown a lot of visual references to other movies and video games, including Assassin’s Creed, Matrix, Fallout and of course Lord of the Rings.

The movie is directed by Christian Rivers, who is at his first major directing role. He previously worked as storyboard artist for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, among others.

Seeing this new trailer makes one hope all the action has not been condensed in it and that we’ll get to see more mechanized wonders in over two-hours of film.
