A glance at the German car industry is enough to notice that the rivalry between Porsche and Mercedes-AMG is becoming sharper by the year. And one of the segments that best portray this is the super-sedan class.
In theory, both the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and the Porsche Panamera Turbo were built to deliver coziness while providing all-round dynamic thrills.
However, if you try to launch these two off the line, you'll notice they can keep up with supercars. So what happens when the uber-saloons are thrown at each other in a drag race?
The quarter-mile sprint shown in the piece of footage at the bottom of the page is here to answer that question. The aficionados over at Evo Magazine have decided to put the pair of red devils to sprinting work.
We don't want to risk ruining the fun of the clip, which is why we won't throw any spoiler your way. And, if you happen to be among those who don't go to bed while reciting the specs of these two twin-turbo V8 monsters, the video includes all the numbers you might need.
If this tale sounds a bit familiar, it might be because these two slabs of Germany have fought before. We're referring to the track battle we showed you in July. Back then, the Affalterbach animal left the Zuffenhausen beast trailing in its wake.
Sure, a Panamera Turbo S should solve the problem for Porschephilles, but there are two issues that stand in the way of such a story. First of all, such a car doesn't exist anymore: with the second coming on the Panny, the German automaker decided to drop the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid as the range-topper.
Secondly, the Turbo is already considerably more expensive than the E63 S, so turning to an even spicier Porsche wouldn't be fair. So yes, it would've been nice to see the new platform of the 2017 Panamera helping the two-ton model shed some weight.
However, an important part of this segment's clientele won't be all that bothered by such dynamic conclusions, turning to other aspects when taking a buying decision.
