Expect Dodge to Supercharge the Viper

In case the image above spells “Viper on drugs”, you’re not mistaking. At least not by much, as “Viper on steroids” is what we want to talk about - there have been multiple reports indicating Dodge is looking to supercharge the Viper.

As allpar writes, Chrysler is currently playing with supercharged V10 engines and we may just get a blown Viper. Taken in isolation, the super car had no need for such shenanigans.

Alas, the Viper is not alone and besides the competition coming from the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, its own range brothers, the Charger and Challenger Hellcat, threaten it. Chrysler has already explained the 707 hp Hellcat V8 doesn’t fit in the Viper, which means the car’s V10 will get its own supercharger.

In order for the whole project to remain viable, power is expected to sit between 700 and 800 hp, as topping the latter would require serious all-round upgrades - the Viper has a major pricing advantage over other supercars and this has to be kept.

As for the peak torque, the Tremec TR-6060 in the Viper can deal with up to 650 lb-ft (881 Nm). This is the value for the upgraded version of the box, used on the Challenger Hellcat. Unless, Dodge decides to change the gearbox altogether, the aforementioned value is expected to be the higher limit for the torque.

The Viper is a car that needs to be driven for a while in order to be fully understood. Perhaps this is why sales have been falling behind and we can only hope the future mechanical updates will... blow some magical dust over the Viper.
