Yesterday, the internet was buzzing with news of BMW’s new tri-turbo super diesel engine. According to a media report, the Bavarians revealed that the 3.0-liter straight six would produce 381 horsepower at a dealer meeting.
The units was to be dropped into the 5-Series, which was to get a M550d designation and standard all wheel drive to deal with the massive 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque this thing produces. It was also clear that the X5 and X6 SUV would be the next recipients of the tri-turbo but it wasn’t apparent if we would have to wait for a new generation to arrive.
But company inside sources have told us the tri-turbo will be introduced right away into the BMW X6, which the source added would get some special styling features. This was enough for us to understand that the tri-turbo X6 is likely coming with the facelift next year.
The source said the new engine would be used in the X6 xDrive50d, a new range-topping diesel. The output is likely to stay the same as in the 5-Series, though all of the other engines in the range will receive a tweak, with the small exception of the X6 M.
Our photographers recently caught up with a prototype version of the X6 and as you can see, some of the new BMW styling cues have been used. It has new angel eyes with tapered power ends, a new lower air intakes, with a different position for the fog lights, while the taillights will receive LED technology.
