When it comes to their line-up, BMW has a certain way of doing things. Usually, for a typical production model, the company launches a mid-life facelift that is supposed to keep it going until the new version comes out.
Often, that facelift comes at around 4 years after the car was introduced (42 months to be more precise). However, it should be noted that not all cars get facelifts. For example, M cars are usually left alone.

They might get small cosmetic tweaks from time to time and some more standard kit but in terms of performance and the mills used, they usually remain the same throughout. But what about i cars?

Along with the i3 and i8, BMW basically introduced a new sub-brand to the world, i. Aiming at producing eco-friendly and exciting cars at the same time, the i sub-brand is an entirely different breed compared to the rest of the industry.

That being said, it will be interesting to see how BMW approaches the production span and changes in the field of EVs and adjusts to them. Our reliable source inside the Munich HQ claims that the i3 will get an update (or facelift) somewhere in 2016, early 2017.

However, he could not provide any additional info on the matter, therefore leaving us to wonder what it could be. One thing the car could use is bigger batteries. And by bigger, I don’t necessarily mean in size but rather in capacity. That could be the one real aim of this update.

Of course, if BMW decided to apply the same treatment to i cars as to standard ones, the update will include a bunch of improvements throughout the car and not only under the seats.

Only time will tell what plans the Germans have for their i3 but for now, we’re betting that the update the car will get will be in the battery department.
