Ex-F1 Racer Johnny Herbert Makes BTCC Debut

Ex-F1 British racing driver Johnny Herbert is making his comeback, only this time for the final three rounds of the British Touring Car Championship season. The driver was signed by Team Dynamics to get behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Type R and try to bring the third title for the British team.

Herbert will replace James Thompson for the BTCC races at Silverstone, Rockingham and Brands Hatch, as James will compete for the last time in the Honda Civic this weekend at Knockhill. Thompson is leaving the team due to some commitments made prior to signing with the Team Dynamics.

However, though Thompson joined the team for the second round of the season at Thruxton, has already won on three occasions this year and heads to Scotland sitting inside the top six in the championship standings.

As for Herbert, as already tested the 2000cc Honda Civic for half a day at Rockingham during summer testing and admitted to have been left with a good impression.

“I’m really excited to be racing in the Civic,”
Herbert was quoted as saying in a statement for the press. “It’s very different to what I was used to in Formula 1 but no less of an adrenaline rush. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel at Silverstone and build on the great result the team has had already this season.”

Herbert has won three races during his F1 career and has also competed in sports cars winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1991 driving a Mazda 787B. By making his comeback with the Civic Type R in the BTCC this year, he will follow in the footsteps of drivers like Jim Clark, Sir Jack Brabham and Nigel Mansell, all of whom enjoyed success in both F1 and the BTCC.
