EVs to Increase Power Demand in Finland

Studies show that the demand for electricity may rise with 28% from current levels, by the year 2030, in Finland. This will happen, in part, because pretty soon some of the Earth’s population will start plugging in their new cars, as electric vehicles are a thing of the near future. A report presented last month showed that this growth will be slower than in recent years.

The Finnish Energy Industries said that annual Finnish electricity demand would reach a level of about 100 to 111 TWh (terrawatt hours) in 2030 from abut 87 TWh last year. The numbers are co-dependent to the pace of recovery from recession.

The Finnish officials said that “in the future, electricity demand will clearly grow more slowly”. Between 1998 and 2001, electricity consumption had risen an annual 2.1 percent. The strongest growth is expected to take pace in the services sector, as well as in traffic, as the number of electric cars will increase. The industrial field’s need for electrical energy is expected to be 16 percent higher.

In order for Finland to cope with the higher demand and reduce it’s dependence on electricity imports, it would need between 7,000 and 8,000 megawatts (MW) in new electricity capacity by 2030.

It seems that the new wave of electric cars will not come without it’s price, as the green side of transportation needs serious investments in a supporting infrastructure. And the Finnish seem to be ready to take that step.
