EVO TV Takes a BMW M3 CRT on the Nurburgring

67, that’s how many BMW E90 M3 CRT cars were ever built and the guys from EVO TV had the honor of driving one, on the Nurburgring. Well, maybe it wasn’t the whole team but editor Henry Catchpole is definitely a lucky man.

He had the chance to take such a rare car for a spin, a once in a lifetime experience for him and for another few people around the world. On top of that, he was lucky enough to come across another CRT model on his test drive, something that had a 1 in a million chance of happening.

To get a better grasp of why I’m so excited about the CRT version of the M3, you should know that the name is an acronym for Carbon Racing Technology and shares its engine with the GTS limited-edition model.

That means it has a 4.4-liter V8 under the bonnet that makes 444 HP compared to the stock 420 HP of the 4-liter V8 on the regular M3s. On top of that, it’s fitted with the 7-speed DCT gearbox that allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds, just 0.1 seconds slower than the upcoming model.

The whole idea behind the CRT concept was to make it lighter. In this regard, they replaced everything they could with carbon fiber but they also kept luxury items close at hand like the navigation and high-end surround sound system for a better experience. Overall, it ended up 100 lbs (45 kg) lighter than the stock M3. It may seem like a small difference but listen to Henry describe how much it changed the car.
