EV Charger Market Will Expand to 12.7 Milion Units in 2020, Report Claims

When it comes to forecasting the electric car market's behaviour in the next five or more years, the Internet is not lacking studies and reports. But someone thought a look at how the EV charger market will evolve in the future could be a useful point of view.

IHS Automotive published a new auto tech report covering an interesting and vital topic for the green-car society: EV charging infrastructure. So, let's see the findings, shall we?

The most striking aspect is that by 2020, around 12.7 million EV chargers will be available around the world, with sales reaching 2-3 million units sold every year.

To put things into (future) perspective, think about this: annual EV sales will reach 1 million in 2024 according to another study while, in 2014, 130,000 US buyers opted for a plug-in electric car.

The study also points out that at this moment, the number of EV chargers in use is thought to be situated around the 1 million mark, the majority being home charging units.

But hear this out: PHEV production will outnumber EV production according to the same study:

"IHS Automotive forecasts that in 2016 for the first time, global PHEV production will exceed pure electric vehicle production and is expected to remain that way for the short to mid-term," explained Ben Scott, senior analyst at IHS Automotive, cited by InsideEVs.

Nonetheless, AC charging is also a crucial part of the future, especially in crowded urban areas, since IHS believes that "10 percent of EV charging stations by 2020 will be within the public or semi-public domain, whereas the global DC charging stations are expected to be relatively low and located on the outskirts of cities."
