For anybody who's not into the economics of car sales, the fact that the Passat is now the 8th best selling car in Europe sounds trivial. But the D-segment sedan has been considered by many companies and analysts to be dead. In fact, Honda is pulling the Accord from its lineup this year.
The 2015 Passat is an all-new car that we've looked at from every possible angle. It's made using the MQB platform like the Golf; it's very spacious and the design is very neutral and sober. But if you visit a Volkswagen dealership, you'll notice many middle-aged men are buying one. Nothing wrong with targeting a specific demographic, especially when some of them are trading in sedans from other companies.
In any case, numbers coming in from European bean counters suggest the Golf was the best seller across the Union with 36,292 units sold last month, a slight increase of 5.8%. The arrival of new versions like the Alltrack and numerous discounts could be the reason for this.
However, the Passat registered a huge boom of 64% in demand. Including the Polo, Volkswagen is now the only brand with 3 cars in the top 10. Compact models made on the same MQB platform as the Golf were also in high demand, as the Skoda Octavia deliveries increased 11.6% and the Audi A3 jumped 10.6%.
