Euro-Spec Jeep Gladiator Looks at Home in Europe’s Wilderness

There is some time left until the first Jeep pickup in ages, the Gladiator, lands on European shores. Sales are expected to start next year, so most were waiting to see the car on the continent’s mountain and forest tracks later in the year. But they were wrong.

The coming weekend Jeep is hosting a huge party in San Martino di Castrozza, Italy for Jeep owners and fans. The event, Camp Jeep, is the largest Jeep Owners Group gathering in the world, and the place where the carmaker will show the Gladiator under the sun for the first time.

But before it does, Jeep unloaded a wealth of photos showing the pickup smack down in the middle of Europe’s wilderness. And what a sight it is…

Shown in black and white in the water, on tree logs, in the woods and climbing rocks, the Gladiator aims to show that despite being a truck, it is still a Jeep.

The nameplate is a revival of a a pickup truck based on the Jeep SJ Wagoneer and produced at first by Willys Motors back in the 1960s. For the next 26 years, the car remained in production in the roster of all other companies that succeeded Willys: Kaiser-Jeep, American Motors and eventually Chrysler.

The revival of the Gladiator comes at the time when pickup truck sales are making headlines, at least in the U.S. In Europe, the appetite for such a body style is not that great, but Jeep wants a slice of the pie nonetheless.

The specifications of the car for the European market, as well as pricing, have not yet been announced. In the States, the car is on sale for now only with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that develops 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A diesel V8 is to be added next year.
