It is a well-known fact that the previous year was a very busy one when talking about the automotive market. Euro NCAP’s job wasn’t easy as it had to choose out of over 40 vehicles released, but now the Best in Class Cars of 2015 top is here.
Last year, a lot of carmakers focused their attention on safety, among other things. This could be observed in the crash tests, as the new full-width frontal test had a significant influence on the fitment of rear seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters across all sectors. What's more, autonomous braking technology is more and more present among carmakers.

Huge differences existed between newer cars embodying the latest safety features and older vehicles that are now far behind the leaders. So now, without further ado, here are the winners:

The best performing large off-roader and also the car with the best overall performance of 2015 is the Volvo XC90. The Swedish company’s latest car scored 97 percent for adult occupant protection and 100 percent for its safety assist technologies.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is the best small off-roader of 2015, scoring 95 percent for adult occupant protection.

In the large family category, there was a tie between the Jaguar XE and the Toyota Avensis. While the Jaguar takes top honors in this class with state-of-the-art safety equipment as standard, the Toyota came close with assistance technologies as an option, but at a generally lower price.

Infiniti Q30 was chosen the best small family car, with high scores in all areas of assessment. Its active hood helped the car gain one of the best results for pedestrian protection.

In the Supermini class there was a close combat between the Honda Jazz and the Suzuki Vitara, but in the end, the Jazz took the prize due to its fitment strategy for advanced safety systems.

While the Volkswagen Touran is the best small MPV, the Ford Galaxy/S-Max won, by a small margin, over the Renault Espace in the large MPV category.

Last but not least, in 2015 Euro NCAP paid particular attention to roadsters, for which the importance of safety is often downplayed by some automakers. Although none of the tested roadsters could achieve five stars, the Mazda MX-5 is the best in its category, with four stars awarded by the well-known car safety performance assessment program.

This year brings new challenges, as Euro NCAP introduces the AEB Pedestrian systems tests. This shouldn’t be much of a problem for the premium sector, where this technology already exists and most carmakers are expected to pass all the tests with flying colors.
