At the same time the Fiat Panda and Jeep Wrangler were licking their wounds, after the former got 0 (zero) stars and the latter only one, Volvo was celebrating a virtually continuous streak of five-star ratings.

The Euro NCAP testing procedure has changed dramatically over the past few years, with a major overhaul being introduced at the beginning of 2018, one that made the current testing procedure the toughest one in the history of the organization.

They currently track a vehicle’s safety systems based on its performance in four main areas: adult occupant protection for driver and passenger, child occupant protection, vulnerable road users protection, and safety assist.

As said, the European organization crashed, among several other cars in this latest batch, the S60 sedan and V60 estate and found that the two are meeting all the criteria for a five-star rating.

Being virtually the same car, except for the slightly different body style, the two managed the same score in all categories: 96 percent for adult occupant protection, 84 percent for child occupant protection, 74 percent for pedestrian and cyclists protection and 76 percent for safety assist systems.

“This result proves that Volvo Cars continues to be an industry leader in safety, constantly pushing the envelope in advancing new technology,” said in a statement Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

“No matter which Volvo you choose, you can always be sure that you and your loved ones travel in one of the safest cars on the market.”

The Euro NCAP tested this year a little over 20 cars. Of them, only seven failed to score the maximum points for a five-star rating.
