Essen 2013: VW Polo R WRC by MTM

The most unlikely of hot hatches made its debut this year, the 220 PS Polo R WRC, the first Polo production model ever fitted with the engine from a current generation Golf GTI. No 4Motion or DSG gearbox, but there's plenty of power to be had from its 2-liter TFSI engine.

Not enough to power for the tuners though, as more than a few jumped at the chance to make a superpowered Polo. The Germans at MTM had no problem doing that and at the same time adding more character.

At the Essen Motor Show today, we got to meet the MTM Polo R WRC. For just €1,500 they say they can take that 220 PS engine and 300 PS. 18-inch alloys, wheel spacers, new suspension and a bunch of other upgrades are all available. If you really want to know more and own one of the 2,500 examples R WRCs, here's where you can get all the goodies.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
