EPA Presents New Fuel Economy Labels

The first major revamp of the fuel economy labels in years was announced today by the Department of Transportation (DoT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as a means for the consumers to be in the loop with what they’re buying, given the recent developments on the auto market.

Dubbed by the EPA the most dramatic overhaul to fuel economy labels in the last 30 years, the changes brought to the so-called window stickers are meant to reflect all the changes brought by the two government agencies to the fuel economy policy in 2010.

More precisely, the new label will include new ways to compare energy use and cost between new-technology cars, estimates on how much consumers will save or spend on fuel over the next five years compared to the average new vehicle, emission levels and a comparison with cars from the same class, estimate of how much fuel or electricity it takes to drive 100 miles and information on the driving range and charging time of an electric vehicle in the case of the electric vehicles.

“Our new fuel economy and environmental labels are a win for automobile consumers and for the nation’s energy independence,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “These labels will provide consumers with up front information about a vehicle’s fuel costs and savings so that they can make informed decisions when purchasing a new car.”

The next step in this unprecedented revision of the way in which the US sees its fuel and energy needs will be taken this July, when the US plans to announce the first-ever national fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards for commercial trucks, vans and buses built in 2014 to 2018.
