EPA Guarantees Safety of E15 Gasoline

According to Detroit Free Press, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official defended the agency’s determination today that gasoline with 15% ethanol was safe for newer model cars and light trucks. Margo Oge, director of the EPA’s office of transportation and Air Quality, informed a House subcommittee that the agency ”considered all of the available evidence, including extensive data,”and that there was ”a strong technical basis for administrator’s decision” to allow E15.

EPA found itself in the hot seat, during a hearing before the House Science, Space and Technology subcommittee, as republican members harshly criticized the agency’s decision and questioned whether E15 had been properly vetted. The panel’s chairman, Rep. Andy Harris, believes the approval of E15 was “not a science-driven decision,” and criticized what he called “the EPA job-killing machine”.

We now have most automakers on record asserting that EPA testing failed to determine that E15 wouldn’t be harmful to car engines, and that warranties would not cover any resulting damages,”said Rep. Any Harris Letters from 12 automakers were released Tuesday that were critical of E15. Today, two additional letters from General Motors and Subaru, were also made available.Margo Oge the director of EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality disagreed with the automakers’ assessments, saying that a Department of Energy study tested nearly 100 cars, including 19 different models, and included tests that measured the impact of E15 after 120,000 miles of wear and tear.

Tom Buis, CEO of Growth Energy- the coalition of ethanol producers and supporters who petitioned the EPA to allow E15 in the marketplace ,issued a scathing statement Thursday criticizing the hearing and saying the opponent heavy witness panel made it “the most stacked hearing ever on ethanol” and ”an obvious attempt to inject politics into a decision made by EPA based on science”
