Energica Ego Has Green Light in the US from the NHTSA and EPA

It's green light for Energica's Ego electric superbike in its way to the US customers. The bike underwent inspections from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is ready to roll.

The Ego recently passed the NHTSA accreditation and received the EPA certification and can be legally sold on US territory as soon as Energica has established a dealership network and can bring the bikes across the pond.

Huge delays span across multiple years

The actual start of sales for the Energica Ego has been delayed on multiple occasions between 2013 and 2015 but the bike finally showed up in what appeared to be production-ready trim last November in Italy at EICMA 2014.

Moreover, as if to compensate for the countless delays, Energica also showed Eva, the naked version of the Ego, an electric roadster. However, no info as of when the Eva could reach production phase and start shipping was offered. Still, since the Eva is largely the same bike as the Ego, we dare hope the wait will not be too long.

Performance has its price

Energica Ego smokes anything Zero Motorcycles can bring to the e-bike battle, but this comes at a price. Stateside, Ego could retail for $34,000, and this puts it in the upscale segment, around twice as expensive as a Zero.

However, while Zero's bikes emphasize all-rounder character, Energica Ego is focused on high performance and targets customers for whom its price is not a major problem.

The first bikes are expected to reach their customers in the US in the third quarter of 2015. Rumors see Eva making it stateside one year after Ego, but with all the delays, we're no longer betting on anything.
