Enata’s Foiler Is a Flying Yacht, But Not Quite

Enata is out to reinvent seafaring with their new, high-performance 2020 Foiler Flying Yacht, which is the advanced, more powerful, quieter and easier to operate version of the 2019 Foiler unveiled last year.

Don’t you just hate it when you get on your yacht or tender all dressed up and the water sprays ruin your entire look? Are you not sick of the buckling and slapping associated with traveling by yacht? Do all these not ruin your otherwise on-fleek selfie game?

Enata knows. So, for the 2020 Foiler Flying Yacht, Enata is offering a more powerful and quieter yacht that can fly above water, just like its name suggests. Well, actually, the Foiler doesn’t fly but it comes very close to it: equipped with 4 retractable hydro-foils, it can soar above water at about 1.5 meters (59 inches), which makes the ride smoother and more pleasant.

Foiler was first introduced last year and it caused quite a sensation. Not only do the hydro-foils make the ride smoother, but traveling above water also helps with seasickness and avoiding water sprays. Considering that this yacht comes with a base price of almost $900,000, the people who do get to ride it don’t want water sprays on their expensive clothes and just as expensive hairdos.

The 2020 version, presented at the Abu Dhabi International Boat Show in October 2019, improves on the previous one, in that it’s more powerful and quieter. The hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system is replaced by two 370-hp turbocharged V8 diesel engines, for a total of 740 hp. The top speed is still of 40 knots (cruising speed is of 18 knots), but the yacht gets there faster and can hold steady for the entire day, if that’s what is wanted of it.

The propulsion system is exceptionally quiet, Enata says. Meanwhile, the 4 hydro-foils do away with the swashing and buckling associated with any yacht traveling at this speed. When they’re in use, passengers in the foredeck seats have the closest experience to flying.

“Experience a unique sense of tranquility and comfort at high speeds,” Enata says. “Anchored in the water by four powerful foils, the Foiler is both extremely stable and immune to wave interference. Driving the Foiler is surprisingly easy and effortless, and the subtle luxury will make any sailing session a relaxing and memorable experience.”

However, the best improvement on the 2020 Foiler is joystick control, which can be activated from the traditional wheel and throttle console. Once activated, the captain can chill just like any other passenger in his foredeck seat, operating the yacht with the controller: forward and backward for speed, and tilting for changing direction.

The Foiler comes in 3 basic layouts but the customization options are nearly endless, depending on the taste of the owner. It can be used as a yacht or as a tender, so it was made to fit a tender garage on a superyacht. Because the hydro-foils are fully retractable, the Foiler can be sailed in shallow waters, and docked at a pontoon or near a superyacht.

Made entirely of carbon fiber, the Foiler benefits of years of research from Enata on how to minimize drag, which makes it a super efficient, fast luxury yacht that is both easy to drive and sophisticated. Enata says it’s ideal “whether you’re after family fun, a little (or a lot) of thrill-seeking, or that James Bond appeal” or if you are part of the “new generation of sailors.” The only condition is that you have the cash for it.

Sure, it might not actually fly, but it comes very close to it. The Foiler is the next best thing to flying in a yacht, without completely leaving the surface of the water. If you’re in the market for a new toy (and you also happen to be super-rich), Enata’s got you covered.
