The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are being criticized for coming across like a bunch of royal hypocrites: after claims that they’re so concerned about climate change and the fate of our planet that they won’t even have more than 2 kids, here they are flying private for another vacation.
Days after they returned from Ibiza, where they celebrated Meghan’s birthday, Meghan and Harry boarded another small private jet and went off to Nice, France, for what the media assumed was another vacation. The fact that they chose to fly private again despite their very public stance on pollution drew genuine ire from the media and the public alike.

Well, Sir Elton John, the singer, would like everyone to calm down. In a series of messages posted to his Twitter, John confirms that, indeed, the Sussexes flew private to Nice, but there is a context that makes it excusable: they were heading to his (John’s) private residence and the plane had been provided to them by the singer himself.

Also, the private jet, a 12-seater Cessna, had been rendered “carbon neutral,” John says. This means that the amount of greenhouse gas emissions for the flight were calculated and John made a financial contribution of the same amount to a project that aims to reduce emissions.

“I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” the musician says. “To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™. I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.”

It’s true that the Sussexes get more negative coverage than other members of the Royal Family, but as Elton John’s own fans point out, there is no such thing as “carbon neutral” so criticism on that point is fair. “Carbon neutral” is basically a phrase coined to assuage rich people’s guilty conscience, since they’re basically paying for the “right” to pollute some more.
