Is it a super battery? Is it an Apple-like product without wheels? The heck if anybody except Elon Musk knows for sure. All we know is that the Musk man teased the “major new Tesla product line - not a car” one last time before it’ll be revealed later today.
Solid facts point towards something that has nothing in common with the Tesla Model S. However, the yet-to-be-unveiled piece of equipment is said to help owners of the Model S charge up the all-electric sedan. Most believe that Elon will launch a home battery.

It’s all a mystery until “the missing piece” will finally be unveiled at the Hawthorne Design Studio in a few hours’ time. The Musk man made some “off the record” comments about it, suggesting that we're looking forward to a “consumer battery” for home use.

“We’re going to unveil the Tesla home battery, or the sort of consumer battery that will be for use in people’s houses or businesses, fairly soon,” he declared during the company’s February earnings call.

The Tesla PR department confirmed to Buzzfeed that “the Tesla home battery and a very large utility scale battery,” are the name of the game. “We will explain the advantages of our solutions and why past battery options were not compelling,” said Jeff Evanson, the outfit’s vice-president of investor relations.

So what’s with that white power bank-like thingy teased by Elon Musk on Twitter prior to the unveiling event? All we know is that “we are trying to figure out what would be a cool stationary [battery] pack. Some will be like the Model S pack; something flat, five inches off the wall, wall mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”

Considering that Musk is the chairman of Solarcity, an entity that partnered up with Tesla to provide battery storage units for homes, all of the previously mentioned intel adds up. Solarcity is currently running a pilot program in San Francisco numbering 300 home battery packs.

After today’s launch and the Gigafactory’s finalization, the battery venture could really pick up the pace.
