Having survived a troubled start of 2018, Elon Musk and Tesla are now looking confidently at the year ahead. With the production issues for the Model 3 pretty much solved and the imminent launch of the car in Europe, the offensive to have in place the required infrastructure has begun.
There are currently several companies working on building a charging infrastructure in Europe, but Tesla plans its own, the so-called Supercharger network. Currently, the Old Continent has over 1,300 such stations spread mostly in central and Western Europe.
With the sales for the Model 3 set to start in the first months of next year, and with most of Europe being a borderless union, Musk saw the need to reassure those planning to travel freely from west to east and north to south they will face no challenges in charging their electric cars.
During the course of next year, Tesla will be installing fast chargers to cover all of Europe, Musk said in a tweet.
“Supercharger coverage will extend to 100% of Europe next year. From Ireland to Kiev, from Norway to Turkey.”
Currently, the network of Tesla superchargers is densely concentrated in Germany, parts of France and the UK. There are a few of them in Spain and Italy as well, but nearly none in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece or Turkey.
It’s unclear what Musk means by 100 percent of Europe and into how many superchargers that translates into. Following his announcement, Musk’s Twitter account was flooded with comments asking for more details.
Responding to these comments the billionaire revealed the after Europe gets its superchargers in 2019 Africa will follow in 2020. Also, “all major highways in Texas will have Superchargers, all the way to Brownsville & across Mexico.”
Knowing Tesla, it’s unlikely we’ll get a comprehensive list of locations where the superchargers will be installed and it’s likely we’ll wake up one day with them there.
