Elon Musk Jokes About Increasing Production After Model 3 Reaction. Or Does He?

Tomorrow morning, Tesla Stores around the world will open their doors at 10:00 am local time, but the workers might have some trouble getting in: more or less lengthy campouts have been scheduled as people are queuing up to place their Model 3 deposit for an early reservation number.
Later that same day, online reservations will open as well, allowing those too lazy to go to an actual store (or living too far away from one) to also manifest their intent of owning the fourth car to bear the Tesla badge. You probably know everything that counts about the Model 3, but we'll just lay it down for you in one short sentence, just in case. It's a compact all-electric sedan (about the size of a BMW 3 Series) with Tesla credentials and a starting price tag of $35,000.

Most of all, though, the Tesla Model 3 is the new piece of technology that everyone wants to have. Teslas have always been like that, but their prohibitive price meant that only those who did very well could actually afford this iPhone of the car industry. With the Model 3, a whole new audience is opening up for Tesla.

Well aware of all the hype, CNBC came up with a poll asking people whether they would put down a $1,000 deposit for a new Tesla Model 3. The phrasing is a bit prone to interpretations, but the answers are pretty clear: "Yes, and I'll definitely buy one." "Yes, but [I am] not sure if I'll actually buy it when the time comes." "No, won't make a deposit but I'll still buy one when they come out." "No, not interested at all." "Still not sure!"

It's safe to assume that a lot of people who would have voted for the second to last option - "No, not interested at all" - couldn't be bothered even to place an answer, so the results don't reflect the will of the whole population (doh). But it's yet another proof that the Model 3 is going to do some serious boat rocking when it comes out.

Over half (55%) of those who cast their vote went for the first answer, saying they'll place the deposit and follow up by buying the car when the time comes. 21 percent weren't so sure what they'll do in two years’ time or so, but said they will make the initial $1,000 downpayment. Only one out of ten said he won't make a reservation yet, but he'll buy the car nonetheless. A similar percentage (9%) of the respondents admitted they don't know how they feel about the whole thing, while only five percent said they weren't interested at all. And they all probably work for GM or Nissan.

Responding to these results, Elon Musk tweeted "Looks like we may need to increase production plans for the Model 3," but the joking tone should only be interpreted as Musk's attempt at being modest.
