Elon Musk Fears a New World War Would Put a Dent in His Plan to Colonize Mars

It’s safe to say that Elon Musk is the man of the moment in almost everything technology-related. His mind seems to never be at sleep, but now he’s identified a possible threat not even him can do anything about.
It was long believed that wars were a major factor in last century’s spectacular technological progress, and there are countless facts to prove it. Competition always yields the best results, and there’s no better motivation to try and best your opponent than the fact that he’s trying to kill you.

Space exploration wouldn’t have evolved so quickly if it weren’t for the Nazi engineers developing the V2 rocket, or for the Cold War distant battle between the Russians and the Americans. It’s actually a sad fact that humanity needs such a gruesome impetus to become better, at least from a technological point of view.

But don’t get too excited about what new developments a third world war could bring. As Elon Musk himself suggests, the destructive side of our technology has gone so far that a global conflagration would most probably involve nuclear armament, leading to possible large-scale destruction, plus a perfectly explainable world-wide movement against technology once the war was over.

That wouldn’t go too well with Elon Musk’s plans for technological development and space exploration. The man behind Tesla is clearly very much attracted to the idea of also being the person behind the first mission to get a man on Mars. From then on, the colonization of the Red Planet would only be a matter of time.

In a very long interview for the GQ magazine and website, Elon Musk talks about his next and most ambitious project, the reason he started SpaceX in the first place: colonizing Mars. People tend to laugh at such claims, but not when Elon Musk is involved - this is the man who launched a rocket to space and brought it back in a matter of years, a man who came up with the Hyperloop transportation idea that’s now being developed, and not to mention the man who showed the entire automotive industry how you build an electric car despite zero years of experience. So, yeah, nobody’s laughing right now.

What most people are doing, actually, is finding another very good reason (besides the other millions) to pray against the outbreak of another world war.

If you feel like getting deeper into the mind of arguably one of the greatest there are today, read the full interview here. He talks about Tesla’s Auto Pilot feature too, so it’s not all space rockets and Martians.
