Tesla Motors boss Elon Musk gave fanboys and potential customers a hint that the Model S electric sedan will be able to travel way more than before on a single charge.
Musk’s tweet mentions that Tesla Motors will hold a press conference this Thursday and the main topic will be that the entire Model S range will receive a software update bound to put an end to range anxiety. Musk was mysterious about how much will the new range grow, given the fact that the current Model S can travel around 208 miles (335 km) on a single charge - or 265 miles (425 km), with a bigger battery pack.

Tesla’s cars work like smartphones when it comes to upgrades which means that vehicles can receive wireless ‘over the air’ (OTA) updates to their software. Basically, you don’t need a mechanic to receive and install add-ons to your car but we’re still wondering what will be Tesla’s software solution for an improved range.

There’s a lot of speculation to be done here and wild guesses are already starting to fill Tesla forums all over the internet. The new software could auto-route the car from starting point to destination along routes with known chargers but it may also enable faster charge at superchargers for the last 25% of the charge.

Owner might also have the chance of restricting motor power via a freeway-oriented super economy mode connected to Model S’ cruise control system. Some voices also suggest that Elon Musk figured out a way to add an automatic supercharge station selection feature, meaning that the driver only enters the final destination and the system figures out where to charge and how much to charge for the fastest travel time.

Of course, it’s just our two cents on the above rumors but we’ll keep you updated once Elon Musk will begin the press conference scheduled for Thursday, March 19, at 9 am.
