Despite referred to as a motorcycle, the Elio 3-wheeler can now be operated by drivers with a valid regular license, the Senate Bill 390 states.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. John Moolenaar (R-Midland) and eliminates the need to own a valid motorcycle license for driving the Elio. Joel Sheltrown, vice president of governmental affairs at Elio told Dealernews that the legislation passed unanimously in all the states where Elio asked for it to be considered.
"There has been no opposition in committee testimony either. In the times we live in, that kind of bipartisan support is encouraging," Sheltrown added.
Elio will make their 3-wheeler available in Q4 2014, with an estimated price of $6,800 (€5,060) and a claimed 84 mpg (2.8 l/100 km) fuel efficiency. The manufacturer is also planning to seek exemption from motorcycle helmet laws.
