Elephant Smashes Car, Chases After it in Sri Lanka

Every time man crosses into the territory of a wild animal, accidents are bound to happen. Wildlife is threatened by the presence of cars and the humans inside, so their reactions are often violent and unpredictable.

Whether the latest video of the sort to gain international media attention shows an elephant’s reaction to feeling threatened or something more disturbing is up for debate. As of now, commenters believe the animal attacked the car packed with people because it was sick or in pain, the Daily Mail notes.

The video was shot in Sri Lanka, Sithulpauwa, from inside the car, which was initially stopped on the road. The elephant approaches the vehicles and, all of a sudden, places its heavy trunk on the windshield, smashing it.

The driver realizes the danger and starts the engine, to back away. He keeps reversing the car for almost 3 full minutes and the elephant is still there, in pursuit of it.

Whereas most attacks of this kind happen because the animal feels threatened or harassed, in this particular case, it could have been sick – at least, according to some viewers who took the time to comment on the video.

The way they see it, the driver should have continued on his way after going around the elephant, and then called authorities. The animal is in dire need of medical assistance, considering the unprovoked attack and its gait.

“There is something wrong with the elephant. Poor thing. This breaks my heart,” one commenter writes, as per the Mail. “He looks like he is in pain. I hope he can get some help! Why did this person not turn his car around and drive the right way instead of backing up so far?”

For once, a video of this type elicits sympathy for the animal and not the humans trapped inside the car. They’re ok, by the way.
