Electrify America Wants an Emoji for EVs Because All Else Is Great in the World

In a very short time, emojis have become one of the quickest way to communicate. From sadness to happiness, from love to hate, there’s nothing you can’t convey with an emoji. Oh, wait, there is. You can’t say electric car sitting next to a public charging station.

That’s a big issue, it seems, for one of the leading charging stations operators in the U.S., Electrify America. Having managed to solve all of the issues with EV charging in the states, the company has enough spare time to take it upon itself to solve this monumental task.

A few hours before the World Emoji Day gets here – yes, there is such a thing, and it’s celebrated on July 17 – Electrify America announced it has officially requested for the introduction of an emoji meant to represent “electric vehicle with charger.”

It seems that’s something you can do. Asking for an emoji to be created, that is. And there’s even an organization you can request this of, named Unicode Consortium.

To support its request, the company also launched an online petition, backed so far – at the time of this writing – by a huge crowd of 20 people.

“As EVs become more popular and charging station networks continue to expand, we felt it was time for an emoji that reflects the changing industry and future of transportation,” explains the why behind the decision Rich Steinberg, Electrify’s director of marketing and communication.

“We hope an emoji, a symbol used in everyday digital communication, will help more people get used to the idea of driving an EV and become excited about the possibility of owning one someday.”

The guys and gals from Steinberg’s department even went to the trouble of coming up with the design of this new emoji, attached above. It shows a car of unknown make sitting in a parking lot, plugged into a charging station.

Try as we might, we couldn’t find any useful ways to sneak this thing into a conversation, other than using it as an excuse. Something like “well, honey, I’ll be a few hours late as I’m waiting for the {insert EV emoji}.”
