If you’re living in the U.S., chances are by now you’ve already seen a public Electrify America charging station. They’re hard to miss, as they are nearly everywhere. And soon they’ll enter your home.
Until this week, the only way you could have charged your vehicle using the stations of this Volkswagen spinoff was to go out and hunt for one. That changes as of now, after the company announced the availability of its first home charger.

The unit is Level 2, meaning it provides charging power of up to 7.6kW, a more than decent amount and clearly above the standard Level 1 charger. It is equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, can be plugged into a 240-volt outlet and most importantly, it can be installed both inside and outside the residence.

To back the launch of the charging station, Electrify America announced it would update its mobile app as well to include support for customers. Using it, people will be able to track in-session charging, review charge history and monitor the charger’s status.

The decision to offer home chargers was made because of the EV owners' habits, says the company’s senior manager for L2 Operations, Nina Huesgen.

“We recognize that many of today’s EV drivers do more than 80 percent of their charging at home, and with the introduction of our L2 home chargers, Electrify America is providing consumers with a more convenient and reliable option that should help increase the appeal of EV ownership,” the executive said.

According to Electrify America, the charger is compatible with all-electric vehicles currently on the market. It is available for purchase from both the company’s website and on Amazon for $499. Installation is done with the help of a specialized company called Qmerit and other installers.

Electrify America has plans to have 3,500 public chargers installed in the U.S. by December 2021.
