Electric Range Rover In the Pipeline

With the exception of the Evoque, every other Range Rover is a luxury barge on wheels, with thumping great V8 engines filling their engine bays. Of course, there's a 3-liter TDV6 available as well, but this mill isn't appropriate to have on such a majestic vehicle.
So what would you say if Land Rover were to give the Range Rover lineup a new, all-electric model? Blasphemy? Selling out? A way to wipe the carbon footprint of every other Chelsea tractor out there? Mmm, not quite. The 2015 Volvo XC90 is the first proper SUV that made a step in this direction with the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant, but this is just a small preview of things to come in the biz.

Tesla Motors will roll out the Model X early in 2015. Boasting with seven seats, Falcon wing doors and the Model S P85D's two-motor, AWD layout, this is a bit of a bet for the Palo Alto-based EV carmaker.

Nevertheless, there's little chance the Model X is going to be a commercial flop due to the fact a lot of people already placed orders for the thing. Inspired by the overwhelming hype of the Model X, an unidentified Land Rover official told AutoCar that they're considering to make a Range Rover EV.

This will likely come in the form of a sharp, low-roofed crossover, maybe something even more striking than the Range Rover Sport. Aesthetic ambiguity aside, the mysterious electric Range Rover will certainly differentiate itself visually from the big, boxy Range Rovers at the top of the automaker's food chain.

Even JLR's engineering director Wolfgang Ziebart hinted in September that the group plans to make a Jaguar XJ-sized electric Range Rover if the US and Chinese markets will hike their electric vehicle buying momentum. Last but not least, the previously mentioned publication estimates the electrified Range Rover will hold a £90,000 sticker price and be off-road capable thanks to adjustable air suspension.
