Last year, a group of engineers from the Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works facility presented the Jaguar E-Type Zero, the emissions-free version of the iconic sports car. At the time, the model was only a concept, and Jaguar did not announce plans to take it into production.
Now, at the Pebble Beach event in Monterey, California, Jaguar brought with it a new version of the model, and a piece of news that is sure to make enthusiasts scramble to learn more: the electric E-Type will be produced.
Actually, not produced per se, but rather restored and converted to run on electric power, and then sold to new or existing customers. For current owners of E-Types. Jaguar says an electric vehicle conversion service will also be offered.
To be on the safe side, Jaguar will make this entire conversion process fully reversible, meaning that should an E-Type owner not like the buzz, he can have the car run on fuel once again.
Jaguar will use the technology developed for the I-Pace SUV, currently taking on Tesla’s Model X wherever it can. There are no details on what performance the E-Type EV will have with this powertrain – Jaguar says both technical specifications and pricing details will follow.
On the concept shown last year, power was supplied by a 40 kW battery that gave the car a range of only 170 miles (270 kilometers). The I-Pace, on the other hand, has a 90-kW lithium-ion battery and a range of 470km (292miles).
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the Jaguar E-type Zero concept. Future-proofing the enjoyment of classic car ownership is a major stepping stone for Jaguar Classic,” said in a statement Tim Hannig, JLR Classic director.
“E-type Zero showcases the incredible heritage of the E-type, and the expertise and craftsmanship at Classic Works, while demonstrating Jaguar Land Rover’s dedication to creating zero-emission vehicles across every part of the business, including Jaguar Classic.”
