Electric Bikes Sales Surge Massively

Electric bicycles are selling like hot cakes and what better proof than the whopping 28% sales increase over the last years figures announced one of the biggest bike maker on the Old Continent, the Dutch Accel Group.

The Accel Group is home to a lot of the famous bike brands, such as Winora, Hercules, Haibike, Koga or Sparta, and the first half of the year saw more than 110,000 pedelecs sold throughout the world, accounting for more than 36% of the group's turnover.

These bikes brought €138.6 million ($184 million) in revenues and a €385 million ($511.126 million) turnover, a hefty 16% hike compared to the same period in 2012.

However, many of the electric bicycles tested in Germany by ADAC/Stiftung Warentest standards failed to comply to the required safety levels, and Accel Group's two wheelers were no exception.

Since the tests proved that most of the electric bikes failed to comply with the electro-magnetic compatibility and other safety standards, Accel's products have not been caught in the fallout, Accel Group's CEO René J. Takens adds.

"As an e-bike manufacturer or supplier it is not sufficient to rely on the EMC compliance certificates that e-bike component suppliers offer on their products. As wiring can act as an antenna, you have to have all your complete e-bike models EMC tested," Takens told Bike Europe, adding that the rather disheartening German test results should be seen like a good impulse towards safer e-bikes.
