Electric Bikes and Trikes Could Boom in the Philippines

Eastern Asia is home to millions of small-displacement motorcycles, scooters and trikes, all of them using petrol, but things are definitely changing. The Philippines could see a major boom in electric mobility as local banks are apparently interested in fueling the expansion of the market.

It's the case of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), willing to help Manila Electric in their effort to grow the electric bike/trike market. As few as such vehicles are to be seen in the Philippines now, Manila Electric have already prepared a prototype version of the eVehicle Power Station they plan to install throughout the country.

ADB is providing a $300 mil (€225.75 mil) loan fund to help customers get around 100,000 electric bikes on the streets by 2017. Such initiatives are absolutely cool, especially with the scale of such plans: they can really show how efficient switching for electric mobility can be. The future will also bring important data on the actual operational costs of an e-bike network, hopefully opening more eyes around the world.
