With El Chapo serving a life sentence behind bars in the U.S., his sons, also known as El Chapitos, have reportedly taken over in running the Sinaloa Cartel. They’re also ripping a page out of Pablo Escobar’s How to Be a Druglord textbook.
Pablo Escobar was famous for his generosity toward his loyal soldiers and the people living in the regions he operated in, especially around Christmas. El Chapo’s sons are taking a cue from him and recently threw a massive “posada,” a Christmas party meant to raise support for the cartel. Have yourself a narco Christmas.
It came to an abrupt end when military soldiers swept in at about 1 a.m.
According to the local media, word on social media, and the Milenio video report available at the bottom of the page, more than 800 people were present at the party, which included several live bands, pinatas, and no social distancing. Also in the schedule was a planned raffle of seven brand new cars (ten, according to some reports, including SUVs), which would have seen a handful of lucky residents of Culiacan, Sinaloa, drive home in a new ride.
The cars, some of which were 2021 models, were presented with massive gift bows and CDS (Cártel de Sinaloa) stickers, while all home appliances and electronics bore the JGL initials on the box: El Chapo’s full name is Joaquín Guzmán Loera. All of them, without exception, were seized by the government, and the crowd was dispersed without incident.
Sinaloa’s security ministry Cristóbal Castañeda confirmed the reports on his Twitter, saying the operation was rendered possible by the fact that videos from the party were being circulated on social media. It is believed Ivan Archivaldo Guzmán was responsible for organizing the event, but the report hasn’t been confirmed.
No one was arrested. Technically, the party wasn’t illegal except for the fact that social distancing and mask-wearing regulations weren’t enforced, which led to its cancellation.
