Eighty BMW ActiveE Cars Added to the DriveNow Fleet

DriveNow is a service provided as a subsidiary of BMW, in the USA and various cities around Europe. This week, the Germans announced that the San Francisco area will benefit from 80 new BMW ActiveE cars that will join the existing fleet.

The good news continued with the announcement that the DriveNow app will now benefit from the added functionality of a parking system that will help drivers find free parking spots nearby, including those that are also offering chargers.

“DriveNow with street parking is available in several cities across Europe, and it has been a very successful business model, so we are pleased to bring street parking to the U.S.,” said Richard Steinberg, CEO of DriveNow USA. “By expanding our offerings in San Francisco, our members will find it is more convenient than ever to find and park a DriveNow vehicle.”

In a fun marketing scheme, the guys behind the DriveNow platform also want you to name the new cars, through social media. In this regard, the community is invited to offer the most creative names that should follow a simple protocol:

  • Use the letters “A” and “E,” as in “ActiveE”;
  • Use the letters “E” and “V,” as in “electric vehicle”; or
  • Use the letters “B,” “E” and “V,” as in “battery electric vehicle.”
The letters could be used consecutively or as first and last names, such as ArchiEm EVita, BEVerly or Escape Vehicle. You can submit your proposal by May 23rd, if you’re a DriveNow member. The chosen names will show up on the DriveNow app and on the DriveNow website.

The new ActiveE cars are being brought in from BMW’s Electronaut program that helped raise valuable data about the driving habits of EV drivers. They will be available on San Francisco streets and 17 DriveNow locations around the San Francisco Bay Area, including Palo Alto, the SF International Airport and the Oakland International Airport.
