EICMA 2015: Horex Makes Comeback with 2016 VR6

After a rather surprising announcement that the company filed for bankruptcy in September last year, Horex has once again raised from the ashes as the new owners have just unveiled its narrow-angle, six-cylinder engine. It should be said that both the 2016 VR6 and its exclusive Silver Edition look stunning in the flesh.

Bikers must have heard of the brand’s tempestuous past, but for those who haven’t, a quick recap is required. Founded in 1920 by the German Rex glassware maker, the company initially designed motorcycles in collaboration with Columbus, later merging into one. As the company would rise to become a famous brand, World War II interrupted production, with the manufacturer picking up things where they were left off after the conflict.

Daimler-Benz took over in 1960, only to bring motorcycle production to an end. Fifty years later the brand would be revived, as the Horex motorcycle with a narrow-angle, six-cylinder supercharged engine would be available for sale in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at the end of 2011. Inspired by a Volkswagen powerplant, the VR6 Supercharged engine would power the new model, while an aluminum bridge frame with a steel steering head formed the chassis.

Despite all the efforts, the company would once again terminate its production, only to be taken over by 3C-Carbon Group AG earlier this year. Under the new ownership, the engine was optimized and refined. Its current manufacturer claims that the re-engineered aggregate now boasts a significantly better performance and guarantees an excellent riding experience.

Concerning specs, the company claims its optimized water cooled six cylinder four-stroke VR engine has a 1218 cc displacement developing 167 hp and 138 Nm of torque. Running through a six-speed gearbox, the bike comes with a high-performance stainless steel exhaust system with CAT-box center silencer and two stainless steel rear silencers.

To mark the relaunch of the brand, Horex also presented a special series, limited to 33 models with specific components and special materials. The sales phase for the new Horex VR6 Silver Edition is over, and due to the high demand, the company has decided to choose owners via random selection.
