Battery swapping has long been discussed as a solution for the limited range that keeps EVs from booming, and now it seems that a Taiwanese company wants to revolutionize the scheme over in Europe.
While the company’s key asset is its battery swapping scheme, Gogoro introduced an electric scooter back in January. With the Smarscooter being released over in Taipei, this has already convinced 2,000 customers and installed 90 battery swapping stations.
The company has raised an extra $130 million in funding, with Gogoro now announcing its plans to bring the battery-swapping scheme to Europe next year. It will all start in Amsterdam, with the most important figure being the six-second time required for interchanging the batteries, a massive change compared to the charging times of any EV out there.
The investors betting on Gogoro include Taiwan's National Development Fund and Panasonic - this reminds us of how Panasonic injected cash into Tesla, being one of the aspects that have led to Gogoro being nicknamed “the Tesla of scooters.”
“Amsterdam is widely considered a forward thinking global leader in smart city innovation, and we are excited to be welcoming Gogoro to Amsterdam as a participant in Amsterdam’s Smart City Experience Lab and as Gogoro’s first European market,” said Amsterdam’s Chief Technology Officer Ger Baron.
With Amsterdam being famous for having more bicycles than people, Gogoro’s promised efficiency should deliver spectacular results.
“The greatest challenge of our time is determining how we manage, distribute and experience energy in smarter ways. Many European cities are embracing innovation and new business models to drive a more efficient and flexible energy future. This is why Gogoro is expanding into Europe in 2016,” said Horace Luke, co-founder and CEO of Gogoro.
