EICMA 2015: Ducati Renews Its Hypermotard Range with Increased Output

Aside from the looks - some minor carbon fiber improvements in the mudguard department and a raised comfort saddle with 20 mm of extra padding available as a Ducati Performance accessory - the 2016 Ducati Hypermotard has experienced a modest increase in its power output. It should be mentioned, though, the quality of the craftsmanship is vividly present.

The supply is huge and making a choice comes rather difficult, here at EICMA 2015. Nevertheless, the path has taken us to the Ducati department, and not just the regular city toy; it’s the mother of the supermoto, the Hypermotard lineup. As it was initially announced, the 2016 refresh is revolving around one major upgrade: the engine.

The arrival of the new EURO 4 certified 937cc Ducati Testastretta. The twin-cylinder is to be used on both the Ducati Hypermotard and the SP, as well as on the Hyperstrada model. The change may not be tremendous, as the new 937cc Ducati Testastretta 11° engine guarantees a maximum power of 113 hp and, most of all, a 10% increase in torque, but it’s noteworthy nevertheless.

The output is being cooled by an oil radiator and is attached to the steel tube Trellis frame that, as fans of the model know, is a trademark of the Hypermotard range. Approaching each of the models, we couldn’t help but notice that all are equipped with the top-notch gizmos the Italians offer. With the Ducati Safety Pack on board, the bikes now feature a 3-level ABS, 8 levels of Ducati Traction Control, and 3 Riding Modes.

Moreover, each Riding Mode has different electronic settings to provide the Hypermotard with three different personalities. Concerning specifics, it should be noted that the Hypermotard 939 suspension has a 43 mm diameter upside-down Kayaba fork with 170 mm travel and a Sachs shock absorber with adjustable rebound damping, providing 150 mm of wheel travel.

The 939 SP, on the other hand, has a livery inspired by the MotoGP and at the front a fully adjustable 50 mm diameter upside-down Ohlins fork with 185 mm of travel. The rear suspension uses a fully adjustable Ohlins shock absorber that allows for 175 mm rear wheel travel. For those who missed that class, it should be said that these specifications take the ride height of the Hypermotard 939 SP to 890 mm.

The Hyperstrada 939 suspension relies on a 43 mm upside-down Kayaba with 130 mm travel, while at the rear there's a Sachs shock absorber with easily adjustable rebound damping and remote spring pre-load which allows for 133 mm travel for the rear wheel.
